Large, vigorously growing tree with a wide conical crown. It can reach a height of 20 to 25 m. The 5-lobed, nicely coloured leaf has a dark green surface and a red-purple underside. Because of its dark colour, preferably applied on a light site. Flowers are of the species. The wings of the winged nutlets have a light pink hue. 'Atropupureum' is applied as a park tree, avenue tree or a solitary in the city and on industrial estates. As the tree is sea wind resistant, it is also planted along the coast.
