For the refurbishment Dirk Cousaert Design’s showroom, Avalon L-E landscapers were hired for the challenge of creating a tree atrium within the existing building capacity. This required taking the necessary measures in terms of structure and soil in order to create a good growing location as well as achieving the image that the designer had in mind. After extensive research, a third of the existing roof was dismantled and the honour of taking centre stage in this atrium was bestowed upon a multi-stem, trained Acer rubrum. The red maple brings the seasons inside. In summer, the foliage provides natural protection from the sunlight and keeps the building cool and in the dark months, the absence of leaves means more light is let in.
