At the beginning of this century, plans were made to transform the disused, 120 hectares site of the blast-furnace complex of Belval-Ouest in Esch sur Alzette into a new, multifunctional centre for Luxemburg. In 2002, Buro Lubbers won the international competition to develop this city. The agency tried to create a fluent continuation into the original vegetation in its plans by using a lot of multi-trunk trees.
